You say their name and get nothing. You repeat the command three, four, five times. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you’re wondering if this is just your life now - a dog who only listens when they feel like it. It’s frustrating. Exhausting. And honestly? A little embarrassing when it happens in front of other people. Here’s what’s happening: every day your dog only listening when they want to continues, your dog is learning that commands are optional. And that pattern only gets stronger

Don’t repeat your commands! Allow your dog time to process, and you can literally watch them think in real time! Don’t forget, If they are confused, guide them. There is a big difference between disobedience, confusion, and not knowing. | Say It Once Dog Training

Why we break the rules and repeat commands… So many have been taught to never repeat commands. The idea stems from wanting to avoid sharing “empty” commands and teaching dogs that consequences aren’t consistent, and thus neither is behavior. What this has done is created a mindset where any repeating of commands is typically viewed as wrong, incorrect, or damaging to training. We have a different take on this… If you’re looking for a program based on proven success with clients, dogs, and buildi

Why you SHOULD repeat commands… There’s lots of poorly thought through, yet fiercely defended concepts in the dog training realm. Never repeating a command is one of the most common examples… and one that I always get questions about at seminars or shadow programs. The foundation of the idea is a solid one. If we repeat commands without consequence then we’re watering down the value of the commands — and will start to teach the dog that commands are something they can choose when to listen and w

Why You SHOULD repeat commands… So many folks struggle with even exploring this concept because they’ve been told for so long, by so many, that it’s improper and/or damaging to the training. The truth is, there’s a way to repeat commands which actually helps the dog and the training to be more successful, and there’s ways to repeat commands which undermine it. I’ve taught this concept to so many owners and trainers, and once explained and demonstrated many shift their approach when they see the

Why repeat commands when everyone says not to? I’ve talked about this a bunch. One of the commonly accepted rules in the training world is “Don’t repeat commands.” And while I agree that you shouldn’t repeat empty commands (commands without a corresponding consequence), like so many things in the training world the nuance has been lost, people have just taken the information at a superficial level, and now treat it as an unquestionable law. And so if folks aren’t allowed to repeat commands what

Does your dog bark? Is your dog reactive? This loop starts in the house. Your dog is constantly in training, and is constantly learning. The question is, are you teaching them, or are they teaching them selves. When your dog is barking out, the window in the person continues to walk away from them, your dog is learning to be reactive. If you have a dog that is already reactive on the leash, this is only going to amplify , your problem. And often times this is where reactivity can start. How do y

Here's the truth no one tells you. Recall training is a lot easier when it's not that important if your dog recalls. When you live near a place or find a place that is so remote that your dog can be off leash for hours it makes it easier. When you can ignore them and it doesn't reallv matter if they wander and sniff around, it changes everything. Being off leash then becomes normal and no big deal anymore. Our dogs are completely different dogs now and I barely had to do a thing. Anyone else eve

Tag the repeater in your family. if you want your dog to listen to you, remember to Say It Once Dog Training. When you repeat your words, even though your dog may listen on the third or fourth time that you said it, they also learned that they don’t have to listen to the first second or third time that you’ve said it. It’s extremely important to give commands only when you are in a position to reinforce the commands. To piggyback off of a post I did last week, this is why it’s so important at th

If you’re the owner of a reactive dog, then you need to hear this! Reactivity can feel overwhelming — for the dog and the owner. And when we get overwhelmed, our instinct is to talk more, repeat commands, or try to verbally “snap them out of it.” But in that moment, your dog isn’t being disobedient… they’re just scared, overstimulated, or unsure. They don’t need more words — they need space, guidance, and calm handling. Compassion first. Pressure second. Talking last. Your dog isn’t giving you a

If your dog keeps repeating the same behavior… they’re not broken. They’re just really good at math. Seriously. Dogs run constant equations: Jump on guest get pet = repeat. Pull on leash reach destination = repeat. Ignore recall nothing happens = repeat. That’s not rebellion. That’s arithmetic. When a behavior pays, it stays. When it sometimes pays, it REALLY stays. Intermittent rewards are like casino jackpots for dogs. You might not win every time… but when you do? Oh, we’re playing that game

Ever feel like your dog keeps repeating bad habits? 🐶🤯 Chances are, they’re being accidentally rewarded for them. Dogs don’t think in terms of “good” or “bad”—they repeat what works. Attention = reward. Even a quick reaction can reinforce unwanted behavior. Train smarter by rewarding calm, balanced energy. Dogs repeat behaviors that get attention, even if that attention is frustration or correction. When calm behavior is what earns engagement and access, the behavior you want starts showing up more often.
