After a week of fighting it became clear that Operation Market Garden had failed. On 25 September 1944 many of the trapped British and Polish paratroopers in Oosterbeek were evacuated across the river Rhine. Of the 10.600 paratroopers near Arnhem, 2.398 managed to escape. Today in History: Operation Market Garden Begins On this day in 1944, the Allies launched Operation Market Garden, one of the largest airborne assaults of World War II. From September 17–25, Allied forces fought to seize key bridges over the River Rhine and push into German-occupied territory in the Netherlands.
