Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve® is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast!

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, California, north of San Diego. Take Hwy 5 to Carmel Valley Road, go west to North Torrey Pines Rd. Go south (left) about a mile to the Reserve entrance (right) at the foot of the hill.

Torrey pines are believed to be the remnants of an ancient woodland that once flourished along the southern California coast, but now they grow naturally only on this small strip of San Diego coastline and on Santa Rosa Island. Here, trees cling to the face of the crumbling sandstone or stand tall in sheltered canyons.

These are most common to the mountainous areas of San Diego County but are also found at Torrey Pines State Reserve. They belong to a group of scarabs known collectively as chafers, the ten-lined june beetle feeding on the foliage of a variety of conifers and broad leaf trees.

The UC San Diego survey found only 8. It is probable that at least a few more species are still in the Reserve but in such small numbers and in such restricted locations that their sightings are very rare.
