During the first morning training after D. Wayne Lukas' death, backside workers paid tribute to the legendary trainer and carried on his legacy.

"Wayne Lukas reinvented the game," Lanny Kohnhorst, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association's Director of Horsemen's Relations. "Wayne produced champions, from Grade 1 winners to stallion prospects to next generation of trainers, and defined American Thoroughbred racing."

A jam-packed weekend of Thoroughbred racing was overshadowed by the news that legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas died peacefully Saturday at age 89 after a career of personal accomplishment and devotion to the industry.
