COVID-19 appears to be on the rise in some parts of California as a new, highly contagious subvariant — featuring 'razor blade throat' symptoms overseas — is becoming increasingly dominant.

The WHO has designated Nimbus as a ‘variant under monitoring’ and considers the public health risk low at the global level. Current vaccines are expected to remain effective. The variant has earned a new nickname – ‘razor blade throat’ Covid.
