Chappell Roan won the Grammy for best new artist and used her speech to demand that record labels provide health insurance for their artists.

Roan was dropped by a label after her early work didn’t immediately resonate with audiences. Part of that journey was also reflected in her speech.

Chappell Roan won the Grammy Award for best new artist, and used her moment to speak out for all struggling artists. The “Pink Pony Club” singer took the stage holding a notebook where she read her speech. After making a few general thank-yous, she struck a serious note about the lack of benefits emerging acts receive.

The Midwest Princess received six Grammy nominations this year, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Good Luck, Babe!," as well as Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

Chappell Roan called out record labels for not doing enough to support their artists, especially burgeoning ones, during her speech at the Grammys.

Before that run of performances, Beyoncé added to her all-time record haul of Grammy Awards on Sunday with a win for best country album with “Cowboy Carter” during the Sunday primetime broadcast and another for best best country duo/group with Miley Cyrus for “II Most Wanted.”

Chappell Roan is officially the 2025 Grammys’ Best New Artist. But she didn’t use her time accepting the prestigious award to draw any further attention to her win. Instead, the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer used her moment onstage to call out record labels for not providing emerging artists with livable wages.

Chappell Roan isn’t the only one dropping $25,000 to support fellow artists. After former music exec Jeff Rabhan called out Roan in an op-ed for the Hollywood Reporter, Roan fought back and asked Rabhan to go band for band in donations to Backline’s “We Got You” campaign inspired by her Grammys speech advocating for better healthcare for musicians.
