The San Diego Zoo is celebrating the birth of its newest addition to the sloth family. It is the third baby for Xena, a 12-year-old sloth who has two other children, Tornero and Colheita. Some significant time has passed since the zoo last welcomed a sloth pup.

Gaylene Thomas, a wildlife care manager at the San Diego Zoo, oversees two teams that care for a variety of species, including leopards, tigers, hippos, giraffes, deer, the giant pandas and red pandas. Among those animals are also some of the zoo’s newest babies: twin sloth bear cubs and two koala joeys.

The San Diego Zoo announced the birth of a sloth pup, the first of its species to be born at the facility since 2022.
