The House Budget Committee has advanced the bill as a way to lower federal spending so that President Donald Trump's tax cuts can be approved.

Donald Trump visited Capitol Hill to strong-arm Republicans in the House of Representatives into supporting a budget-reconciliation bill. Afterwards Mike Johnson, the House speaker, struck a tentative deal with moderate Republicans in blue states to raise a cap on a deduction taxpayers can make to federal income tax for having paid state and local taxes.
