Workers representing 25,000 union members already have shown up to picket lines at Safeway stores across the Bay Area to make their voices heard. Unions say they have bargaining for five months, but the company hasn’t been offering wage increases or benefits that account for the cost of living.

Despite active negotiations for better pay, Safeways in California are advertising temporary positions with higher wages than they’re currently paying union members.

UFCW Local 5, which represents about 25,000 Safeway employees in the Bay Area and Northern California, said it has spent months pushing for a new contract with better pay and healthcare benefits.
