The Boston Red Sox could stand to add to their bullpen, and lost out on not one but two potential targets in the same day.

Free agent starter Nick Pivetta could return to the Boston Red Sox now that his market has all but disappeared. Both The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey and MLB Network’s Jon Morosi have reported that Pivetta and his camp could be getting desperate as the multiple offers they expected this winter have failed to materialize.

When was the last time the Red Sox had this much starting pitching depth heading into spring training? Have they ever had this much? It’s been an issue throughout franchise history. Unable to consistently develop homegrown starters,
