U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says El Salvador’s president has offered to accept deportees from the U.S. of any nationality, including violent American criminals now imprisoned in the United States.

A U.S. official said the Trump administration had no plans to try to deport American citizens. The U.S. government cannot deport American citizens and such a move would be met with legal challenges.

El Salvador offered to house dangerous criminals deported by the U.S., including U.S. citizens and legal residents, in its jails. This arrangement was discussed during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's meeting with President Nayib Bukele.
