Raw milk comes directly from cows, sheep or goats. Some health and food safety experts say drinking raw milk doesn’t come without health risks. Lately, those concerns have been elevated as a deadly strain of bird flu is infecting dairy farms around the country.

New Jersey and Delaware have joined Pennsylvania in a national initiative to combat the spread of bird flu by testing raw milk at dairy farms. In December, the USDA launched a milk testing program to detect bird flu in dairy cow herds. Pennsylvania was one of the first six states to join the National Milk Testing Strategy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin collecting samples of raw cow’s milk cheese from across the U.S. to test for the presence of bird flu, spurred on by the ongoing outbreaks
