The U.K. government is pledging to clean up Lake Windermere, a sewage-clogged beauty spot that has come to symbolize the filthy state of Britain’s waterways.

On a visit to Windermere in Cumbria he said the government was "committed" to the clean up as part of its Plan for Change scheme, which aims to upgrade crumbling water infrastructure using private investment.

Wastewater from United Utilities and private sewage treatment along with rural and urban land use are among a range of pollution issues Windermere faces. Sewage spills from water infrastructure have contributed to the pollution of beauty spots including Windermere.

For years celebrities and campaigners have rallied to demand the Lake District's iconic Windermere is cleaned up from pollution - finally the Government agrees.
