Four years after nearly drafting him third overall, coach Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco scooped up the former Patriots signal-caller as a backup to starter Brock Purdy.

March 13 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with free agent quarterback Mac Jones. Sources told NFL Network, ESPN and The Athletic about the agreement Wednesday. The pact has a maximum value of $11.5 million. Jones is expected to play a backup role to 49ers starter Brock Purdy.
