AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday he has ordered the deployment of more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops, along with more than 2,000 state police, to help local law enforcement manage protests against President Donald Trump and the ongoing federal immigration raids.
The Capitol and Capitol grounds were evacuated around 1 p.m. "out of an abundance of caution," Texas DPS said. The grounds have now reopened.
Many residents without legal status are staying away from anti-ICE protests because they don't feel safe. More demonstrations are planned for the weekend.
Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill and across the country remain divided following protests against Trump's deportation policies.
