U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver was charged on Monday for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers outside of an ICE detention facility earlier this month.
Democrats have denounced the charges as politically motivated and an effort by the Trump administration to intimidate member of Congress and chill oversight.
The prosecution of McIver is a rare federal criminal case against a sitting member of Congress for allegations other than fraud or corruption.
